HOW TOOTH-WHITENING WORKS ?

Tooth enamel is porous. Over many years, staining agents, such as wine, coffee and cigarettes, actually seep through the enamel causing unattractive yellowing of your teeth. Here is where tooth-whitening procedures come in! There are many different ways to whiten your teeth and we will look into those more thoroughly in the next section, but basically, most tooth-whitening systems contain one of two bleaching agents, carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These chemicals get past the enamel layer of your teeth and go deep down to attack difficult stains.

HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?

The length of time that results will last can vary depending on your teeth and on the method chosen. Generally, effects will last around 6-9 months at which point you can have a touch-up appointment with your dentist, or begin using over-the-counter products again.

Causes of Tooth Staining?

Tooth staining often results from repeated consumption of foods or drinks that contain pigments that darken teeth, like coffee, tea, red wine and even blueberries. It can also be caused by smoking, certain antibiotics or medications, age or poor dental hygiene, such as inadequate brushing and flossing. Tooth discoloration can also be genetic.
